I so much related to you saying that you went into Chemistry because it provided an economic future. That was the ethos of our time. The classical/general liberal arts degree seemed to be on its way to extinction. What are you going to do with that?
Then, the West began massive deindustrialization (which caused many of us to wonder if going into science was the correct decision), while, IRONICALLY college attendance skyrocketed, universities became hideously expensive and the ______ Studies degree became the coin of the realm.
Alexander Mercouris just said that when Tony Blair assumed office in 1997, the UK economy was bigger than both the Chinese & Indian economies COMBINED. I could not believe that (not that I would doubt Alex) and had to look it up, but it is true.
How did our university system grow and thrive while all that was going on?
Something went really really really haywire, but what?
